Data Sharing Frequently Asked Questions

Consumers Energy now offers a way for you to directly share your utility data (e.g. energy use intervals, account details, etc.) with third parties. Often companies request this data in order to assess whether your business is a candidate for an energy efficiency upgrade or to manage an existing energy device installed in your business.

When you grant data access to a third party, we will provide them download links to the specific types of utility data you have authorized for however long you authorized. Our data sharing system is compliant with the U.S. Department of Energy's DataGuard Energy Data Privacy Program and Green Button Connect My Data.

This data sharing program is entirely opt-in. You can see and revoke any of your authorizations for data sharing at any time via your My Authorizations dashboard.

When you are sent an authorization request link from a third party, click a button to authorize in a third party application, or click on the data sharing link for a third party in our Directory, you will be taken through a few simple online steps to authorize data sharing with that third party:

Step 1: Log in to your Consumers Energy online account and navigate to the Energy Dashboard. Navigate to Cost and Use Trends Graph and click the link for Share and manage data.

Step 2: Follow the on screen steps to share your data with a third party.

Step 3: Your data will automatically be shared with the third party. You will receive an email confirmation. Keep this email to make future changes to your data sharing plan.

When you authorize or decline, we will redirect you to the third party who requested the authorization (or your authorization receipt, if they did not setup a redirect url).

If you decide to stop an authorization before it expires, you can revoke any authorization at any time from your My Authorizations dashboard or by clicking on the link in your authorization email receipt. Otherwise, your authorization included an experation date, which when reached will end third party data access.

NOTE: Revoking an authorization only cuts off the third party company from further access to your data. However, during the time your authorization was active, they may have downloaded your data before you revoked. If you want them to delete any of your data they downloaded, you need to contact them directly (we included contact information for them in your Data Share Confirmation).

If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback around this data sharing program, you can contact us via our customer support form or email support@consumersenergy.utilityapi.net.
